United Gedo People's Council
a
vision for unity and prosperity |
Gedo turned out to be a
land of suffering people due to war, destruction, hunger and disease.
People who live in this region are known for their tolerance, kindness,
cooperativeness, and they are not war-like in nature. However, why do
wars occur in Gedo? Are these wars between satisfied and non-satisfied
clans? Or are they caused by maltreatment and mistrust of leadership? To
answer these questions, Gedo intellectuals and scholars living in
Diaspora have launched a non-governmental, non-profit organization
called United Gedo People’s Council. We are launching this organization
for the reason that the Gedo Region has been socially and politically
confused, and lacked comprehensible political direction. We are
establishing it simply because politicians, intellectuals, traditional
leaders, business people and religious educators have disappointed Gedo
people. We are making the first move since our people have been
exploited and ill treated by greedy and ruthless individuals.
Organizations are formed for a reason, a purpose, and a cause. Our
reason is to develop our talents and expertise and help to shape our
destiny. Our purpose is to speak a loud and clear voice and create a
collective force that can play a great role in our society. Our cause is
to go back and check our past mistakes, so that we will never repeat the
same mistakes in the future. Our goal is to heal wounds of mistrust and
create a healthy and productive society. Our aim is how to restore the
confidence of our people secure our borders and maintain a good
relationship with our neighborhood provinces. Our objectives are how to
produce a good leadership and a reliable panel of expertise. Our
ambitions are how to take practical steps for the ideological, moral,
intellectual, and economic development in agreement with the norms,
values and principles of our society.
Gedo Region has never
been a place for one ethnic group and it is not today. It encompasses
many groups including the immigrants, who have just arrived, those who
have been here for generations and indigenous people. A group of greedy
individuals has divided our communities into warfare factions and
kinfolks. As result, these divisions have created a deep mistrust and
hatred in the midst of Gedo people and among our neighborhood tribes.
This mistrust has become bottomless and
extensive. These individuals have betrayed the will of our people and
exploited them. Because past behavior is a good example of the future
performance, they are considered to be failed individuals and deserve
not to be trusted or determined to our destiny.
A message to Gedo
Communities.
A society is either
sick or healthy depending on whether it is functioning normally
or abnormally. It becomes a full-fledge functioning system when its
socio-economic, political structure and belief systems all reinforce one
another. Once normality and stability has been established, civil
society can began. However, in the absence of above-mentioned
principles, there can be no prosperity, no culture, and no society. To
understand the forces that strengthen and divide societies and the
forces that promote social stability, we should ask ourselves what the
nature is ofthe human trust and how does it relate to the unity in the
society? What is the relationship between the fundamental values and
political structure in that society?
What are the most effective instruments to reconcile conflicts in the
society and smooth the process of social stability, cohesion and
harmonization?
For more than a
decade,Gedo Region of Southern Somalia has been confronted a combination
of armed conflicts, lack of social developments, diseases and poverty.
One thing our people must understand is that fighting will never be a
solution to any conflict. We must put down the weapons of war and pick
up the promise of peace, and the strength of give-and-take should
replace the greediness of mankind which today is so prevalent? Moreover,
it is time for us to recognize the truth, reconcile with each other and
we must bury individual selfish ambitions and uplift our common verbal
communication to work for the common good.
In addition, the most
powerful connection we all share with each other is our need to survive
and to preserve our culture, values, identity, integrity, and most
important our unity. To minimize loses and maximize benefits, we
must find a strategy to give us opportunity to survive and prosper in
the
Somali system. To gain self-confidence and to overcome all bad habits,
we have to learn how to trust and co-operate with each other.
Leadership positions
are earned, accomplished, or at least requires some good efforts, and a
good leader is the one who increases harmony and decreases conflicts
between his people. If that is the case of the good leadership, we must
trade our desires and votes with a well-defined leader who should be
clear, insightful and capable in working with domestic, national and
international affairs and wish to fulfill his promises of our future
stability and prosperity.
We believe that a
better Gedo will grow from accepting, appreciating, and
understanding one another. Our goal must be positive and must be capable
of making Gedo a better place for the next generation, for truly, is
that not what our struggle is about? Aren’t we merely trying to lay the
foundations for a brighter future for our children?
Finally, collectively
we can heal our wounds, change the painful and difficult er that has
been associated with the Gedo people, to do so we must take charge and
be in control of our own future.
